Despite the growth of the area, Bald Head Island has managed to maintain its natural setting and landscape. The homes located on the island seem to blend in seamlessly with their surrounds, whether located on the oceanfront, near the harbor, within the harbor or one of the many other picturesque locations on the island. Many visitors to the island find the lack of commercialism characteristic to places such as Myrtle Beach, charming instead of a detriment, as most people seek out the natural and unspoiled setting that Bald Head Island provides. This island was once home and refuge for Native Americans, pirates and soldiers and boasts the former sight of a Civil War fort. Once of the most famous residents of the island is the Bald Head Island Lighthouse, or ‘Old Baldy’ as it is affectionately known by. This lighthouse is famous for being the oldest lighthouse still standing in the state of North Carolina and dates back to the early 1800s. A picture of this historical landmark is definitely a vacation memento that you don’t want to miss out on.

There are many shops and restaurants that dot the waterfront area of Bald Head Island and can be found further inland as well. When you have had your fill of the beach, spend some time strolling around shops to pick up a souvenir of your visit. When you have worked up and appetite, take a break and visit one of the available restaurants for some delicious dishes whether it be steak, fresh seafood, chicken, hamburgers and more.
